Basic Copyediting

Basic copyediting is the least intrusive kind of editing, and I charge one cent per word for it. If you choose this service, I will correct only the most glaring of grammar and spelling errors. If Xulon Press is publishing your book, I'll format your manuscript to its guidelines. If you choose another publisher, I edit according to the Chicago Manual of Style. Those two options are the only choices you have; I refuse to keep fifty stylebooks around my office. They would seriously crowd my Jane Austen collection.

You should choose this service if you are afraid that editing will wreck your style. This service also fits you if you think your book is good as it stands, and you just want to back up your spellcheck.

Ghostwriting

Ghostwriting is a true partnership of talents. You supply the facts and the story, and I supply the writing chops. If you have a really great idea for a book but you know that English was not your best subject in school, then I am here for you. Fiction authors need to supply a detailed outline of the plot and some character sketches (we can work together on those). Nonfiction authors need to supply a detailed outline of their ideas and facts to support them. Any facts you use have to cite their sources.

If you choose the ghostwriting option, then you are hiring me exclusively for two months. I charge five thousand dollars in advance for this service.

Substantive Editing

If you choose substantive editing, you will get me at my best. I have a sincere passion for lean, vigorous prose that says what it intends without fluff. Strunk and White is my editing bible, and James Chapman is my hero. I joyously war against the ambiguous pronoun, the passive verb, and the colorless adjective. I charge a paltry one and a half cents per word to elevate your style from the mundane to the sublime.

You should choose this service if you want basic copyediting as well as an infusion of energy and color.
